Antony Beevor and Christina Lamb - The Eternal War against Women
Thursday January 28th at 6.30pm EST
Antony Beevor (Berlin: The Downfall 1945; Arnhem: The Battle for the Bridges, 1944) and Christina Lamb (Our Bodies, Their Battlefield; I Am Malala), discuss how rape has been used throughout history as a tool of fear and intimidation, as a method of devastating communities and a way for soldiers and young men to create grotesque bonds of solidarity, trust and loyalty. Taking events from the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, Bosnia, Congo and the more recent ordeal of the Yazidi women they will reflect upon how this crime is often perpetrated systematically to inflict maximum humiliation upon the enemy. They will also shed light on the plight of the victims whose suffering is not only often ignored, but often also enabled and perpetuated.
