Lemn Sissay MBE is a British author and broadcaster.
He has written a series of poetry collections. In 2008 Bishop Desmond Tutu unveiled his poem Gilt of Cain in London, displayed on a sculpture by artist Michael Visocchi, the collaboration commemorates the abolition of transatlantic slave trade in 1807. He has also written for stage and BBC radio plays and documentaries.
He is currently associate artist at the Southbank Centre, London and ambassador for The Children’s Reading Fund. Lemn was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters by University of Huddersfield in 2009. In 2015, he was elected as Chancellor of the University of Manchester for a seven-year term.
Lemn often talks passionately about his youth and experience of being a foster child. His inspiring story is depicted in his play Something Dark (2006) and in BBC documentary Internal Flight (1995). You can listen to his incredible story here.
