Margaret Brown is a documentarian whose work examines the American South. She is known for Be Here to Love Me – her seminal film on Townes Van Zandt, The Great Invisible, which uncovered the lasting impacts of the BP oil spill, and The Order of Myths, which explored Brown’s native Mobile, Alabama and its still segregated Mardi Gras celebration. Her most recent film Descendant tells the story of the only known slave ship that’s ever been discovered on North American soil and the resilience of its survivors’ descendants in their fight to reclaim a century of denied history. It was acquired by Netflix and the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions and went on to be named to the Oscars shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. Brown’s latest project is the upcoming docuseries The Yogurt Shop Murders, which premiered at SXSW in March and debuts this summer on HBO.
